Is Your Hair Dry Or Damaged?

When it comes to your hair concerns, an easy mistake that’s frequently made is confusing dry and damaged hair. Did you know that these two hair types should actually be treated differently? Trying to tell the difference on your own can be tough… so if you’ve always wondered whether your hair is dry, damaged or even both, then keep on reading!

How Can Hair Become Damaged or Dry?

It’s important to gain an understanding on what your hair needs.

Hair damage occurs when things like friction, heat, and chemical treatments attack the outer layer of your hair. This ultimately leaves cracks in your hair’s exterior, causing it to look dull, frizzy, or brittle. It also will make your hair more prone to damage and breakage.

  • Do you color or chemically treat your hair?
  • Does your hair break or split?
  • Are your ends rough, thinner and lighter?

If you answered mostly yes, your hair could use some REPAIR!

Or…

  • Is your hair rough from roots to ends?
  • Does your hair tangle easily?
  • Do you have a dry scalp?

If you answered mostly yes, your hair is craving HYDRATION!

A variety of factors can lead to dry hair including environmental conditions, your hair-care routine, and your physical health. Dry hair occurs when your hair doesn’t receive or retain enough moisture. The heat from using blow dryers, hair straighteners and curling irons can really do a number on your strands as well. When your hair is dry, the outer layer breaks down, causing it to appear frizzy, dull and unhealthy.

Take the Test!

Repair Test:

Elasticity measures how well your hair stretches and returns to its original length. Hair with good elasticity is more resilient during styling, while hair with poor elasticity is weak and damaged. This can result in breakage during styling.

Step 1– Hold a strand of your hair secure at the scalp.

Step 2– Take your other hand and gently tug on the bottom end of the strand.

*If your hair stretches and easily breaks then your hair needs REPAIR!

Hydration Test

Porosity affects your hair’s ability to receive and retain moisture. This also plays a big role in how much hydration your hair needs. Hair with high porosity absorbs products quickly, while hair with low porosity is more resistant to product absorption.

Step 1– Take a small section of your hair and hold it at the ends.

Step 2– With your other hand, backcomb your hair lightly while sliding your fingers along the end of your hair up towards your scalp.

*If you hair feels rough and backcombs easily, your hair needs HYDRATION!
